All about treatments and the town

Bad Schönau

Embedded in the soft hills of the “Buckligen Welt”, at the most southern point of Lower Austria lies the spa of Bad Schönau. It’s just your perfect sanctuary to recover from the strains of everyday life. Besides an exceptional range of different health therapies, a pleasant altitude of 505 meters above sea level and the mild climate, it’s the endless amount of free time activities that make Bad Schönau a one of a kind experience. Well signposted hiking and biking trails and the gorgeous spa park with its tennis courts and cultural events guarantee for light-hearted days of pure relaxation.

The town from its best side

Despite being a modern town today, Bad Schönau has never lost its charm. First mentioned in a document from 1264, “Sconwave”, meaning “By the beautiful meadow”, has already then been praised for its unique location. Around its very first building – the “Wehrkirche” (fortified church) from 1120 – the sleepy farming village grew and grew over time to become a handsome town. When workers where drilling for coal in 1913, they accidentally discovered a spring in 260 meters depth. From 1950 on, the spring could be used for baths. The savings club “Landsknechte” purchased the spring and the neighboring “Meierhof” to use the emerging carbonic acid gas for healing carbonic acid baths. Since the Schönauer mineral spring has been declared a healing spring in 1953, the town was allowed to be referred to as “Bad Schönau”. In 1973, it was officially recognized as spa.

Bad Schönau was voted Lower Austria’s most beautiful flower village in 1997. Just two years later, in 1999, the town won the award for the most beautiful flower village in all of Austria. Bad Schönau is also proud to call itself “Europe’s most beautiful flower village”.
